What is a Private Key?
A Private Key is a tiny bit of code that is paired with a public key to set off algorithms for text encryption and decryption. Private and public keys are both derived from your recovery phrases. These private keys gives you full control over the public address, meaning you can send crypto or sign transactions with it. If you have the private key then you basically have ownership of the specific address.
Importing a Wallet via Private Key
Note:
This feature is currently only supported in the mobile app. Also private key import is only supported for select single chains. Multi-coin import using private key is not supported.
In this example we will Import an Ethereum wallet. Choose the right one you are trying to import.
Access Wallet Import Screen
- Open Trust Wallet and then tap on Settings.
- In the Settings screen, you will find here Wallets.
- Tap on the “+” sign on the upper right then choose Add existing wallet.
- Select Secret phrase
- Select the network, in this example – Ethereum.
- Choose Private key and paste in your private key. Optionally, you can edit the Wallet name field.
- Select Restore wallet
Note: If you are using Trust Wallet for the first time, once you select Get started, you can start the private key import process by selecting “Add existing wallet” and continuing with the steps noted above.
Congratulations, you have successfully imported a wallet.
Attention!
If your Private Key has been exposed, your wallet is completely vulnerable. Recovery Phrases are more robust and adds another layer of protection. However, it is not advisable to continue using your wallet if any of the above mentioned backups have been compromised.
